What's the difference between Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode?

Google's AI Overviews are the short AI summaries that appear automatically at the top of a normal search — you don't opt in. AI Mode is a separate, opt-in conversational search you choose for deeper, multi-step questions. Both run on Google's Gemini, but they cite largely different sources, so appearing in one does not mean you appear in the other.

AI Overviews are the AI-written summary boxes Google now shows above the blue links for many searches. You don't ask for one — Google decides when a query deserves an AI summary and inserts it automatically. The answer is short (usually one to three paragraphs), it's read rather than talked to, and it names only a few sources or businesses. For a med spa, this is the surface that answers "how much does Botox cost in [city]" and names one or two clinics before the patient scrolls.

AI Mode is a distinct, opt-in experience: the patient actively switches into it (a tab or toggle in Search / the Google app) when they want a fuller, conversational answer. It's built for back-and-forth, multi-step questions, produces long-form comparisons, and can pull in live signals. It behaves much more like a chatbot than a results page — the user "pulls" the answer instead of having it "pushed" to them.

Here's the part that matters for a clinic: even though both are powered by Google's Gemini, they don't draw from the same places. Independent analyses of the two surfaces in 2025–2026 found they cite the same web pages only about 14% of the time — they often reach similar conclusions while pointing to different sources. So being named in your city's AI Overview does not mean AI Mode will name you, and vice versa. And neither is guaranteed by ranking #1 in the classic blue links.

The takeaway isn't to chase Google's product names — it's that "getting into Google's AI" is not one target but several, each deciding independently which businesses to name.
