ChatGPT recommends the local businesses it can describe with confidence: what they do, where, and for whom, stated clearly on their own website and repeated consistently by the directories and sources it checks. Great reviews help, but they aren't enough on their own. Clear, consistent, verifiable facts are what get a business named.
When someone asks ChatGPT for the best plumber, dentist or lawyer in their city, it searches the web, reads what it finds, and names a handful of businesses. It favors the ones whose services, service area and credentials are easy to confirm from more than one source.
In our 2026 study of 168 searches across 12 industries and 14 Dallas–Fort Worth cities, 41% of businesses with 4.6+ stars and 60+ reviews were not named by ChatGPT or Google's AI. Many of the businesses that were named had far fewer reviews. Reputation matters, but it doesn't decide the answer by itself.
The work is to make your business easy for an AI to describe accurately: a clear page on your own site for the service people ask about, the same business details everywhere you're listed, and sources that agree with each other. Then check the answer again, because it shifts from week to week.
