ChatGPT names the plumbers it can describe with confidence: the services they offer, the cities they cover, their license, and whether they take emergency calls, stated plainly on their own site and matched by the listings it checks, such as Bing Places, Yelp, BBB and Angi. Review count alone doesn't get a plumber named.
In our 2026 study across 14 Dallas–Fort Worth cities, 38% of plumbers with 4.6+ stars and 60+ reviews were not named by ChatGPT or Google's AI Mode for "best plumber in [city]". In one city, a plumber with more than 13,000 reviews was left out while one with 47 was named.
In our study, ChatGPT's plumber answers most often cited Bestprosintown (6 of 9 searches), Expertise.com (5) and DFW Professionals (2), all city lists of local plumbers. Those are the first lists to check for your own name.
ChatGPT finds local businesses through Bing and the directories it trusts, not through your Google ranking, so a plumber who does well on Google Maps can still be missing. A complete Bing Places listing and consistent name, address and phone everywhere you're listed are the first things to check.
On your own site, give each main service its own clear page (drain cleaning, water heaters, slab leaks) that says where you work and states your Texas plumbing license number. Then ask ChatGPT the question your customers ask and see who it names.
